Did You Expect Mileage Discounts That Did Not Apply to Your Flight?

United promotes that eligible MileagePlus cardholders receive discounted award travel when booking flights with miles, including representations that cardmembers can “save at least 10% on every United flight you book with miles,” with additional savings available for members with Premier status. Consumers may reasonably understand these representations to mean that they will receive savings across MileagePlus redemption bookings.

However, certain partner-operated flights may be excluded from the advertised savings. Although United’s booking process displays partner-operated flights alongside United-operated flights as MileagePlus redemption options — all priced in miles and available through the same booking platform — consumers may not have been clearly informed that the advertised cardmember discounts would not apply to those partner-operated flights.

As a result, cardholders may have paid annual fees or continued using their accounts while expecting advertised mileage savings that allegedly were not available on all eligible award travel options presented by United.
