A 2026 UC Davis study and follow-on reporting found that a substantial share of products sold as avocado oil were adulterated with cheaper oils, oxidized, or otherwise did not match their labeling. Those findings raise the question whether consumers who bought these cooking oils and snack foods received what the label promised.
Consumers frequently pay a premium for cooking oils and snack foods because of the ingredient claim on the front of the package. If that claim is not accurate, purchasers may be entitled to relief under state consumer protection and warranty laws.
Cooking oils and snack foods sold under a range of national brands are labeled and marketed as made with avocado oil. That representation appears on the front of the package, in the product name, and throughout the brands' advertising, and consumers routinely pay more for it.
