What Happened?

On January 9, 2026, Hightower became aware of a security incident involving a compromised user account within its environment. Upon detection, Hightower promptly took steps to secure its network and launched an investigation with the assistance of third-party cybersecurity and digital forensic experts to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

The investigation determined that between January 8, 2026 and January 9, 2026, an unauthorized third party gained access to Hightower’s environment and downloaded certain files without authorization. Hightower conducted a comprehensive review of the impacted data to determine what information was compromised and to identify affected individuals. Hightower determined that the breach was the result of compromised user credentials. Upon completion of this review, Hightower identified approximately 131,483 individuals whose sensitive data was included in the affected files.

On March 23, 2026, Hightower filed a notice with the Maine Attorney General and began sending notice letters to impacted individuals.
