What Happened?

On or about April 7, 2026, MMMCA and “the Funds” -- the Metro-ILA Pension Fund, Metro-ILA Fringe Benefit Fund, and Metro-ILA Individual Account Retirement Fund – identified a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized activity in their network environment. The Funds provide employee benefits to members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (“ILA”) pursuant to collective bargaining agreements between MMMCA and the ILA.

Upon discovering the unauthorized activity, MMMCA and the Funds promptly engaged, through legal counsel, third-party cybersecurity professionals to investigate the nature and scope of the incident. The investigation determined that an unknown threat actor gained access to the organizations’ systems through use of a virtual private network (VPN) belonging to MMMCA and the Funds. The breach was determined to have affected approximately 25,528 individuals, and the exposed information may have included Social Security numbers, dates of birth, phone numbers, and home addresses.

On May 22, 2026, MMMCA filed notice of the data breach with the Attorney General of Maine and started sending notice letters to impacted individuals. As of April 20, 2026, forensic experts have advised that there is no indication of a persistent threat with access to and within the Funds’ and MMMCA’s data environment, though the investigation remains ongoing.
